What Is RDP?
Short answerRDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) is Microsoft’s way to use a Windows computer over the network as if you were sitting in front of it. On a VPSGrid Windows VPS, RDP is the normal method to reach the desktop with your primary IP and Administrator credentials.
Overview
This article explains what RDP is and how it fits a Windows VPS. For step-by-step connection instructions, see the dedicated guides linked below.
What RDP does
- Shows the remote Windows desktop on your local device
- Lets you run Server Manager, PowerShell, IIS, apps, and file tools interactively
- Uses encryption for the remote session (exact strength depends on Windows and client settings)
Think of it as a graphical remote console for Windows — similar in purpose to SSH on Linux, but with a full desktop instead of a text shell.
How RDP is used on VPSGrid
- After provisioning, your Windows VPS is typically reachable with RDP on the public primary IP
- Default username is usually
Administrator(confirm in the VPS Ready email / client area) - Default port is TCP 3389 unless you change it
- If RDP fails, use the browser noVNC/console in the client area as a backup path
What you need to connect
- Active Windows VPS (provisioning finished)
- Primary IPv4 address
- Username and password
- An RDP client on your device (built into Windows; Microsoft Remote Desktop / Windows App on macOS and mobile; Remmina/FreeRDP on Linux)
Security basics (high level)
- Change the initial Administrator password after first login
- Keep Network Level Authentication (NLA) enabled when possible
- Do not turn Windows Firewall off — allow RDP on purpose
- Prefer strong passwords and limited exposure; see the RDP hardening guide for practical steps
Common confusion
- RDP access ≠ Windows license included — VPSGrid Windows plans are generally BYOL
- Hostname at order time ≠ domain — you still point DNS separately for websites
- Port open ≠ service working — Remote Desktop must be enabled and TermService running on the VPS
Frequently Asked Questions
Is RDP only for Windows?
RDP is Microsoft’s protocol for Windows desktops/servers. You can run RDP clients on macOS, Linux, and mobile to connect to a Windows VPS.
Do I use SSH on a Windows VPS instead?
Usually no. Standard VPSGrid Windows administration is RDP (or the browser console). SSH is the normal path for Linux VPS plans.
Where are the how-to steps?
Use the connection guides for your device, the enable-RDP article if the server blocked remote access, and the secure-RDP article for hardening.
