How to Reinstall or Recover Your VPS Operating System

Short answer

Self-service operating-system reinstall is not currently available from the VPSGrid Client Area. If you need a clean OS reinstall, open a support ticket. Before you request a wipe, try reboot and console recovery when those controls are available for your product.

Overview

VPSGrid provides unmanaged KVM VPS hosting. You administer the guest operating system, applications, and data inside the virtual machine. Power controls and (where enabled) the browser console help you recover access without wiping the disk.

This article explains what to try before a reinstall, how Linux and Windows recovery differ from WordPress VPS, and how to request a clean OS reinstall from support.

Try recovery before requesting a reinstall

Connection problems (failed SSH or RDP) do not automatically mean the operating system must be reinstalled. On standard Linux and Windows VPS plans, these Client Area controls are available:

• Start / Stop — power the VPS on or off when it is shut down or needs a full power-off.
• Reboot — restart the VPS when it is running but unstable, stuck, or you need a normal power cycle. See How to Reboot Your VPS from the Client Area and How to Stop and Start Your VPS.
• noVNC console — open a browser console when SSH or RDP is unavailable but the VPS may still be running. See How to Use the NoVNC Console and How to Use the Console When SSH or RDP Fails.

Use Client Area → Services → your VPS to access these actions.

Linux VPS

If SSH stops working, do not assume you need a reinstall. First:

1. Confirm the service status in the Client Area (for example, Active / online).
2. Reboot the VPS if a restart is appropriate.
3. Open the noVNC console and check whether the guest OS responds at the login prompt.
4. Review guest firewall and network settings from the console if you can log in.
5. If you still cannot recover access, contact support (and request a reinstall only if a clean OS is required).

Windows VPS

If Remote Desktop (RDP) is unavailable, do not reinstall solely because RDP fails. First:

1. Confirm VPS status in the Client Area.
2. Reboot the VPS if appropriate.
3. Open the noVNC console and check whether Windows is at a login screen or showing errors.
4. From the console, check whether Remote Desktop or Windows Firewall settings need correction (when you can sign in).
5. Contact support if you cannot restore RDP or the OS is unusable.

WordPress VPS

WordPress VPS plans include Start, Stop, and Reboot in the Client Area. The noVNC / browser console is not available on WordPress VPS products. Self-service OS reinstall is also not available.

If your WordPress site or SSH access fails, reboot when appropriate, then open a support ticket. Do not expect a Client Area console button on WordPress VPS.

How to request a clean OS reinstall

When recovery options are not enough and you need a clean operating system:

1. Sign in to the VPSGrid Client Area.
2. Open a support ticket (or use How to Open a Support Ticket for VPS Issues).
3. Identify the VPS or service (service ID, hostname, and primary IP if known).
4. State clearly that you request a clean operating-system reinstall.
5. Specify the desired supported OS template when you have a preference (for example, a Linux distribution or Windows template you originally ordered).
6. Confirm that important data has been backed up off the VPS, or that you accept possible data loss.

Support handles reinstall requests according to your product and the templates available for that service. Completion time is not guaranteed in this article.

• This article does not document client-area disk snapshots or resource graphs.
• WordPress VPS customers should not look for noVNC in the Client Area.
• VPSGrid does not promise recovery of data that was only stored on the VPS disk.
