What Happens When a Domain Expires?
Short answerWhen a domain expires unpaid, websites and email using that name can stop working. Registries then move through TLD-specific grace / redemption stages before the name can be deleted and re-registered by someone else. Renew early in the client area — do not rely on late recovery.
Overview
Exact day counts for grace and redemption vary by TLD/registry. This article explains the typical sequence and what you should do at VPSGrid. Renew guide: How to Renew a Domain.
Treat the next due / expiry date in Domains → My Domains as the deadline. Enable Auto Renew and pay renewal invoices before that date.
Typical timeline (high level)
- Before expiry — renewal invoice appears; Auto Renew attempts payment when enabled
- Expires unpaid — domain status may show expired; DNS for the name can fail (site/email down)
- Grace period (if offered for that TLD) — renewing is often still possible, sometimes with normal or slightly adjusted fees
- Redemption (if offered) — recovery may still be possible but often costs more and takes longer
- Pending delete / deletion — the name can become available for public registration again; recovery is not guaranteed
What breaks when a domain expires
- Website hostnames stop resolving
- Email for that domain can bounce
- SSL certificates tied to the hostname may fail validation/renewal
- Your VPS can still be online — the problem is DNS/name ownership, not the VM itself
What to do at VPSGrid
- Open Domains → My Domains and check status / next due date
- Pay any unpaid domain renewal invoice under Billing → Invoices
- Use the domain Renew action when shown
- If the domain already shows expired/redemption, open a support ticket immediately with the domain name
Important notes
- Do not assume every TLD has the same grace length
- Domain renewals are generally non-refundable under Terms — Refund Policy Overview
- Keeping WHOIS/account email current helps you receive expiry notices
Frequently Asked Questions
Will my VPS be deleted if the domain expires?
No. VPS and domain are separate. The VPS can keep running while the domain name stops pointing to it.
Can I get the domain back after redemption?
Sometimes, if the registry still allows recovery — contact support quickly. After deletion, anyone may register it.
How do I prevent this?
Enable Auto Renew, keep payment methods valid, and pay renewal invoices as soon as they appear.
