Domain Lock Explained

Short answer

Domain Lock (registrar lock) helps prevent unauthorized transfers of your domain. Keep it enabled for normal use. Disable it only when you intentionally transfer the domain away, then re-enable after.

Overview

In the VPSGrid client area this is shown as registrar / domain lock status on the domain details page. It is a security control for transfers — not a website firewall and not the same as DNSSEC.

What domain lock does

  • Makes unauthorized domain transfers much harder
  • Is a standard safety setting for domains you plan to keep
  • Does not stop you from editing DNS/nameservers (those are separate controls)
  • Does not renew the domain by itself — still pay renewals / use Auto Renew

When to disable lock

  • You are transferring the domain to another registrar and that registrar requires unlock + EPP/auth code
  • Support asks you to unlock temporarily for a transfer workflow

Transfer guide: How to Transfer a Domain to VPSGrid (inbound). For outbound transfers, unlock, get the auth code, then start the transfer at the new registrar.

Security tip

Do not leave domains unlocked longer than needed. Unlock → transfer → lock again.

How to enable or disable lock at VPSGrid

  1. Log in at billing.vpsgrid.net
  2. Open Domains → My Domains
  3. Click the domain
  4. Open the Registrar Lock / lock management tab
  5. Choose Enable or Disable registrar lock and save

My Domains may also offer bulk lock actions when enabled for your account.

Important notes

  • Some TLDs or domain states may not support lock the same way
  • If the lock controls are missing, the domain may be pending, expired, or lock management may not be enabled — contact support
  • Lock status is separate from client-area login security (2FA, passwords)

Frequently Asked Questions

Should lock stay on all the time?

Yes for domains you are keeping. Turn it off only for an intentional transfer.

Does lock stop DNS changes?

No. Nameserver and DNS record edits are separate from registrar transfer lock.

Transfer failing while locked

Disable lock, confirm the auth/EPP code, then retry at the gaining registrar.
