Domain vs Hosting vs VPS
Short answerA domain is your website name. Hosting is where files/apps run. A VPS is a type of hosting: your own virtual server with admin access. At VPSGrid you can buy a domain, a VPS, or both — they are separate products that work together through DNS.
Overview
These three words get mixed up at checkout. This article separates them in plain language. VPS primer: What Is a VPS?. Unmanaged model: What Is Unmanaged VPS Hosting?.
Domain
- Your public name on the internet (example:
example.com) - Registered through a registrar (VPSGrid can register/renew domains)
- Does not store your website files by itself
- Points to a server using DNS (usually an A record to an IP)

Hosting (general)
- “Hosting” means a computer on the internet that serves your site or app
- Shared hosting typically means limited control, provider-managed panels, many sites on one machine
- You still need a domain (or raw IP) for visitors to find the site
VPS (Virtual Private Server)
- A virtual machine with dedicated resource slices (CPU/RAM/disk) and your own OS
- You get root (Linux) or Administrator (Windows) access
- VPSGrid VPS plans are unmanaged — you install and secure the stack
- More flexible than typical shared hosting; more responsibility too

How they work together

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need both a domain and a VPS?
For a public website name, yes you need DNS pointing somewhere. You can use a VPS with only its IP, or point an existing domain from another registrar.

No. Dedicated is a whole physical server. See VPS vs Dedicated for that comparison.
Does buying a domain include hosting?
No. Domain registration and VPS hosting are separate line items.
