How to Connect to Windows VPS from macOS
Short answerOn your Mac, install Microsoft’s RDP client from the App Store (Windows App, formerly Microsoft Remote Desktop), add a PC using your VPS primary IP, sign in as Administrator with your VPS password, then connect. Accept the certificate prompt on first connect if shown.
Overview
macOS does not include a built-in Windows Remote Desktop client like Windows does. This guide covers connecting to a VPSGrid Windows VPS from a Mac. For other devices, see the full multi-platform guide: How to Connect to a Windows VPS Using Remote Desktop (RDP).
Before you start
- VPS status is Active / provisioning finished
- You have the primary IPv4 from the client area or VPS Ready email
- You have the Administrator username and current password
- Your Mac has internet access
Microsoft’s macOS client may appear in the App Store as Windows App or still be referred to as Microsoft Remote Desktop. Either is the correct official client for this guide.
1) Install the RDP client on macOS
- Open the App Store on your Mac
- Search for Windows App or Microsoft Remote Desktop by Microsoft
- Install the free official app
- Open it from Applications / Launchpad
2) Add your VPS as a PC
- In the app, choose Add PC / + (wording varies by app version)
- PC name: enter your VPS primary IP (example:
203.0.113.10) - User account: choose to ask when required, or save
Administratorwith your password in the app’s credential store - Optional: set a Friendly name such as
VPSGrid Windows - Save the PC entry
3) Connect
- Double-click the saved PC (or select Connect)
- Enter
Administratorand your password if prompted - If macOS or the app shows a certificate warning on first connect, verify you typed the correct IP, then continue/trust for this host
- The Windows Server desktop should appear
4) Useful display settings
- Start in full screen or windowed mode from the PC’s settings in the app
- If text looks tiny on Retina displays, adjust display resolution / scaling in the connection settings or inside Windows after login
- Clipboard and folder redirection options exist in the client — enable only what you need
If connection fails
- Confirm the VPS is online in the client area
- Recheck IP, username, and password (passwords are case-sensitive)
- Try the browser noVNC/console from the product page to verify the guest OS is up
- On the server (via console), confirm Remote Desktop is enabled and firewall allows TCP 3389

Important notes
- VPSGrid Windows VPS is unmanaged — you administer Windows after login
- RDP access does not mean a Windows license is included (BYOL) — see Licensing Requirements

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Screen Sharing / VNC instead of RDP?
For VPSGrid Windows VPS, RDP is the supported desktop protocol. Use the billing-area console if RDP is unavailable — do not assume macOS Screen Sharing talks to Windows RDP.
Do I need a Microsoft 365 account to connect?
No. You connect with the VPS Administrator credentials. An App Store Apple ID is only needed to download the client.
Where is the general RDP guide?
See the multi-platform RDP connection article for Windows, Linux, and mobile clients in one place.
