Common VPS Port Numbers
Short answerOn an unmanaged VPSGrid VPS, common ports include SSH 22, RDP 3389, HTTP 80, HTTPS 443, and DNS 53. You must configure listeners and firewalls inside the guest OS — VPSGrid does not manage application ports for you.
Overview
This reference lists ports customers most often configure on a VPSGrid virtual server. Port numbers are industry conventions; your application must listen on the port and your guest OS firewall must allow inbound traffic for remote access to succeed.
Common ports table
| Port | Protocol | Typical service | Notes on VPSGrid |
|---|---|---|---|
| 22 | TCP | SSH (Linux) | Default remote admin for Linux VPS. Restrict to your IP when possible. |
| 3389 | TCP | RDP (Windows) | Remote Desktop for Windows Server. Enable in Windows Firewall. |
| 80 | TCP | HTTP | Web traffic. Bind Nginx/Apache/IIS before testing. |
| 443 | TCP | HTTPS | TLS web traffic. Requires certificate on your stack. |
| 53 | TCP/UDP | DNS | Only if you run a DNS server on the VPS — uncommon for basic hosting. |
| 25 | TCP | SMTP (outbound mail) | Outbound port 25 is commonly restricted. Use an authenticated SMTP relay for application mail. See the Port 25 policy article for review requests. |
| 3306 | TCP | MySQL/MariaDB | Bind to 127.0.0.1 unless remote DB access is required. |
| 5432 | TCP | PostgreSQL | Same binding guidance as MySQL — localhost by default. |
Unmanaged VPS scope
VPSGrid sells unmanaged VPS hosting. Opening ports, configuring web servers, and hardening firewalls are your responsibility inside the guest OS. Support assists with platform billing, provisioning, and primary IP assignment — not with configuring application listeners on your behalf.
To verify a port is listening on Linux: sudo ss -tlnp. On Windows: netstat -an | findstr LISTENING. If the service listens locally but fails remotely, check UFW, firewalld, or Windows Firewall first.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does VPSGrid open ports for me?
No. On unmanaged plans you configure services and firewalls inside the VPS.
Why is outbound port 25 blocked?
Many providers restrict outbound SMTP to reduce spam. Use a transactional SMTP relay or submit a port 25 review ticket if your use case qualifies.
Should MySQL listen on 0.0.0.0?
Only if you intentionally need remote database access. Default to localhost binding and allowlist client IPs in the firewall.
