How to Point a Domain to a VPS

Short answer

Get your VPS primary IP, create DNS A records for @ and usually www pointing to that IP, wait for propagation, then configure Nginx/Apache/IIS to serve that hostname. DNS alone does not install a website.

Overview

This is the full domain → VPS workflow. Detailed A-record notes: How to Point a Domain to Your VPS IP. Concepts: Domain vs Hosting vs VPS.

1) Collect the VPS IP

  1. Log in to billing.vpsgrid.net
  2. Open Services → My Services → your VPS
  3. Copy the primary IPv4

2) Create DNS A records

At your DNS host (VPSGrid Domains DNS management, or Cloudflare/other):

TypeNameValueTTL
A@ (root)YOUR_PRIMARY_IP300–3600
AwwwYOUR_PRIMARY_IP300–3600

For a subdomain only, see How to Create a Subdomain.

If the domain uses other nameservers, change NS first or edit records at that DNS provider — Change Domain Nameservers.

3) Wait and verify DNS

dig +short example.com A
dig +short www.example.com A
# both should return your VPS primary IP

Propagation can take time. Explainer: How DNS Propagation Works.

4) Bind the hostname on the VPS

  • Linux: add an Nginx server block or Apache virtual host for example.com / www.example.com, then reload the web server
  • Windows: add an IIS site binding for the hostname — Host a Website with IIS
  • Open firewall ports 80/443 if serving public HTTP/HTTPS

5) Test in a browser

  • Visit http://example.com (and www)
  • If you see the default web server page, DNS and binding work — deploy your site files next
  • Add HTTPS after HTTP works

Frequently Asked Questions

DNS is correct but the site is unreachable

Confirm the VPS is online, the web server is running, firewall allows 80/443, and you are not testing before propagation finished.

Do I need to buy the domain at VPSGrid?

No. Any domain can point to your VPS IP via A records at whatever DNS host you use.

Is the VPS hostname the same as my domain?

No. Order-time hostname and public DNS names are separate. Visitors need DNS A records.
