Common Domain Transfer Problems

Short answer

Most failed transfers come from a locked domain, wrong/expired EPP/auth code, unconfirmed admin email approval, a transfer still pending, or a domain too close to expiry. Fix the checklist below, then retry.

Overview

Use this when transferring into VPSGrid or away from VPSGrid stalls. Transfer how-to: How to Transfer a Domain to VPSGrid. Lock explainer: Domain Lock Explained.

Quick checklist

  1. Domain is unlocked at the current registrar
  2. You have a fresh EPP / auth code
  3. WHOIS/admin email works and you can approve transfer emails
  4. Domain is not expired / not in redemption
  5. Domain is older than any registry transfer waiting period (often ~60 days after registration/previous transfer — TLD-dependent)
  6. Transfer was started at the gaining registrar with the exact domain spelling

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do transfers take?

Often several days. Instant completion is uncommon unless both sides support faster workflows.

Will my website go down during transfer?

Not if DNS keeps pointing at the same place. Changing nameservers at the same time is what usually causes downtime.
