How to Install Docker on a Linux VPS

Before You Begin

Connect via SSH using How to Connect via SSH to Your VPSGrid Linux VPS, apply OS updates (Updating Ubuntu, Debian, AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux on VPSGrid), and confirm your VPS shows Active in My Services.

Short answer

On Ubuntu or Debian, add Docker's official apt repository, install docker-ce with the Compose plugin, enable the systemd service, and verify with docker run hello-world. You manage host OS patches and socket security on unmanaged VPS plans.

Overview

Containers package applications with dependencies, simplifying deployment and rollback on unmanaged VPS hosting. Docker Engine on your VPSGrid Linux VPS gives you reproducible environments without a separate control panel license.

You remain responsible for patching the host OS, securing the Docker socket, and sizing the VPS for combined container memory usage.

Install Docker Engine on Ubuntu

Remove conflicting packages

Older docker.io packages from default repos may conflict with official Docker CE packages.

sudo apt-get remove -y docker docker-engine docker.io containerd runc 2>/dev/null || true

Add Docker official repository

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install -y ca-certificates curl gnupg
sudo install -m 0755 -d /etc/apt/keyrings
curl -fsSL https://download.docker.com/linux/ubuntu/gpg | sudo gpg --dearmor -o /etc/apt/keyrings/docker.gpg
sudo chmod a+r /etc/apt/keyrings/docker.gpg
echo "deb [arch=$(dpkg --print-architecture) signed-by=/etc/apt/keyrings/docker.gpg] https://download.docker.com/linux/ubuntu $(. /etc/os-release && echo $VERSION_CODENAME) stable" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/docker.list > /dev/null

Verify the codename in the repository line matches your release (jammy, noble, etc.) — interim Ubuntu releases may use UBUNTU_CODENAME from /etc/os-release.

Install docker-ce packages

sudo apt-get update\nsudo apt-get install -y docker-ce docker-ce-cli containerd.io docker-buildx-plugin docker-compose-plugin
Warning

Only run curl pipes to gpg/apt setup from official Docker documentation URLs. Third-party install scripts may inject untrusted repositories.

Install Docker Engine on Debian

Steps mirror Ubuntu — use the Debian GPG key and codename (bookworm, bullseye) in the repository URL.

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install -y ca-certificates curl gnupg
sudo install -m 0755 -d /etc/apt/keyrings
curl -fsSL https://download.docker.com/linux/debian/gpg | sudo gpg --dearmor -o /etc/apt/keyrings/docker.gpg
sudo chmod a+r /etc/apt/keyrings/docker.gpg
echo "deb [arch=$(dpkg --print-architecture) signed-by=/etc/apt/keyrings/docker.gpg] https://download.docker.com/linux/debian $(. /etc/os-release && echo $VERSION_CODENAME) stable" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/docker.list > /dev/null
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install -y docker-ce docker-ce-cli containerd.io docker-buildx-plugin docker-compose-plugin

Configure Docker for production use

Enable Docker at boot

sudo systemctl enable --now docker\nsudo systemctl status docker --no-pager

Add user to docker group (optional)

Non-root users in group docker can manage containers — equivalent to root on the host. Add only trusted administrators.

sudo usermod -aG docker deploy\n# Log out and back in for group membership

Basic daemon security

Do not expose /var/run/docker.sock to the internet or untrusted containers. Pin image tags instead of using :latest in production. Review Basic Linux VPS Security Checklist after installation.

Verify installation

docker --version\ndocker compose version\ndocker run --rm hello-world

Continue with Docker Compose

After Engine is verified, deploy multi-container stacks with docker compose. Order or resize Linux VPS at billing.vpsgrid.net/store/linuxvps when container workloads need more RAM.

Docker storage and disk planning

Docker images and container layers consume root filesystem space on your VPSGrid VPS. Monitor with df -h and docker system df. Plan headroom for image pulls during deployments — a full disk during docker pull can leave containers in inconsistent states.

Updating Docker Engine

When security advisories affect container runtimes, patch Docker through the same apt repository used for installation. Schedule brief maintenance windows — running containers usually survive daemon upgrades but plan for brief service restarts on single-node setups.

Networking published ports

Each -p 8080:80 mapping exposes services publicly unless restricted by guest firewall. Document published ports in your runbook and close unused mappings. Internal-only services should bind to 127.0.0.1 behind Nginx reverse proxy.

BuildKit and multi-stage builds

Use multi-stage Dockerfiles to keep production images small — smaller images deploy faster on VPSGrid NVMe storage and reduce attack surface.

Health checks

Define Dockerfile HEALTHCHECK or orchestrator health checks so reverse proxies stop routing to crashed containers during rolling updates.

Rootless Docker (advanced)

Rootless mode maps container UIDs and avoids requiring root for docker CLI — useful for shared admin teams. Trade-offs include subtle path and port binding differences. Evaluate on staging before production cutover.

Private registries

Pull from trusted registries only. Pin digests for production deploys when supply-chain integrity is required.

SELinux and AppArmor

Host security modules may affect container permissions on hardened templates. Consult distribution docs if bind mounts behave unexpectedly.

Log rotation for containers

JSON-file log drivers can fill disk on busy containers — configure log rotation or centralized logging before production traffic.

Compose project layout

Keep docker-compose.yml and environment files in version control. Separate secrets using env files excluded from git via .gitignore.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does VPSGrid support Docker on all Linux plans?

Docker runs on standard VPSGrid Linux KVM templates when you install it inside the guest OS. Choose sufficient RAM for your container workload — memory limits appear at vpsgrid.net checkout for each plan tier.

Should I use Docker rootless mode?

Rootless Docker reduces risk if a container escape occurs but adds complexity. Many production admins use rootful Docker with strict firewall rules and trusted images only.

How much RAM do I need for Docker on VPSGrid?

Base Docker Engine needs a few hundred MB plus container workloads. Monitor usage with docker stats and upgrade via My Services if sustained memory pressure appears — see High CPU and RAM Usage on Your VPSGrid VPS.

Is Docker available on Windows VPS?

Linux containers require a Linux VPSGrid template. Windows VPS uses different virtualization patterns — use Linux VPS for Docker-centric deployments.
